Wooden Classic Maurice Griffiths

This Maurice Griffiths design classic wooden sloop is a chance to own a part of our maritime history. She was built in 1929 at Leigh on Sea by Cole and Wiggins to a design by the eminent Maurice Griffiths. The present owner has a letter from him written in 1982 confirming that she was one of the earliest Bermudan rig boats built by Cole and Wiggins.

She is built of pitch pine on oak and is 6 tons Thames Measurement.

For lovers of wooden boats, this is a must see.

Maris was designed by Maurice Griffiths and built at Leigh on Sea in 1929 by Cole and Wiggins, now Jagos. She was the first Bermudan rig they had ever completed, constructed of pitch pine on oak frames with Iroko plank decks.

Over the years much has been done to maintain and renovate her, latterly the work has been completed by Scott Metcalf at Waterfront Marine yard in Gwynedd North Wales. Scott is a renowned specialist in the repair and renovation of wooden ships.

In previous interventions iron ballast was removed and replaced with strip lead, as it would have been originally. The original decks were removed in 1986 and all deck beams, carlings, top strakes and beam shelves were replaced and covered with 1/4" Marine ply covered with 3/4" Iroko planks. The keel bolts were renewed in 1995.

The main mast was replaced with a new mast made and fitted by Scott Metcalf in 1995.

More recently in 2012 a new galvanized centre plate was fitted, and the owner replaced the top third of the transom, repaired the keel box and repaired the Knight head at the top of the stem.

The galley comprises a 2 burner gas cooker, with grill and oven, and storage.

The owner has offered her for sale as he feels it is time to pass her on to a younger owner.
